Gnome és un dels escriptori més utilitzats en sistemes X Window. El projecte GNOME (GNU Network Object Model Environment) va sorgir l'agost de 1997 liderat pels Mexicans Miguel de Icaza y Federico Mena.
Distribucions com Ubuntu o Debian, utilitzen Gnome com escriptori per defecte.
Està disponible en més de 35 idiomes i forma part oficial del projecte GNU.
És posterior a KDE, possiblement l'alternativa més coneguda.
Des de ja fa força temps, les aplicacions de KDE es poden executar directament en Gnome i viceversa.

Es poden establir els permisos o polítiques per a diverses accions de Gnome. L'aplicació es pot executar directament des de la línia de comandes amb:

KDE té més opcions, botons, menús i aplicacions que permeten més possibilitats de configuració. Per alguns té més opcions però "més estressant"
Gnome esta més centrat en la usabilitat: simple i senzill i al mínim d'opcions possibles. “It just works”. Poques opcions però "més relaxat".
Respecte al rendiment són gairebé equivalents. Cada entorn té el seus programes estrella. En realitat però, els programes d'un entorn es poden executar en l'altre.

Gnome guarda la seva configuració a una base de dades XML (aka com registre de Gnome). La base de dades també es coneguda com Gconf.

Permet navegar per la configuració de Gnome.
Quan l'executeu al menú Fitxer veureu que hi ha 3 opcions a l'hora de treballar amb finestres de Gconf:
