The install client which will be installed using FAI, is booted via network card or from CD or USB stick. It gets an IP address and boots a Linux kernel which mounts its root file system via NFS from the install server. After the kernel is loaded, the FAI startup script performs the automatic installation which doesn't need any interaction. First, the hard disks will be partitioned, file systems are created and then software packages are installed. After that, the new installed operating system is configured to your local needs using some scripts. Finally the new operating system will be booted from the local disk.

The details of how to install the computer (the configuration) are stored in the configuration space on the install server. Configuration files are shared among groups of computers if they are similar using the class concept. So you need not create a configuration for every new host. Hence, FAI is a scalable method to install a big cluster with a great number of nodes.

FAI can also be used as a network rescue system. You can boot your computer, but it will not perform an installation. Instead it will run a fully functional Debian GNU/Linux without using the local hard disks. Then you can do a remote login and backup or restore a disk partition, check a file system, inspect the hardware or do any other task.

Tecnologies empleades

Consulteu Debian Mirror

NAME
      fai-chboot - manage the network boot configuration files

SYNOPSIS
      fai-chboot [OPTION]... KERNELNAME HOST...
      fai-chboot -l[e|d|t|o|g] [PATTERN]
      fai-chboot -e HOST...
      fai-chboot -d HOST...
      fai-chboot -c HOST|TEMPLATE HOST|TEMPLATE...
      fai-chboot -i [OPTION]... HOST...
      fai-chboot -I [OPTION]... HOST...

DESCRIPTION
      This command creates the configuration files for network booting using pxelinux and DHCP.

      KERNELNAME is the file name of the kernel that will be booted. This kernel will mount the root filesystem via NFS. You can add
      additional kernel parameters and define some FAI specific flags. For each host one configuration file is created. The file name of
      the configuration file is its IP address in upper case hexadecimal. HOST can be a host name, an IP address or the keyword
      "default".

OPTIONS
      -B Set default values for FAI_FLAGS. This is the same as -f verbose,sshd,reboot

      -c Copy an existing config file to one or more hosts or templates and enable them for network booting.

      -C CFDIR
             Use CFDIR as the configuration directory. Default is /etc/fai. You can also set the environment variable FAI_ETC_DIR.

      -D DIR Set the directory for the network boot configuration to DIR. The default value is /srv/tftp/fai/pxelinux.cfg/.

      -d Disable network booting for HOST. This renames the config file adding the suffix .disable to it.

      -e Reenable network booting for HOST. This renames the config file removing the suffix .disable from it, so the next time it
             uses the PXE configuration.

      -f fai_flags
             Set FAI_FLAGS. The flags must be comma separated.

      -F Set default values for FAI_FLAGS. This is the same as -f verbose,sshd,createvt

      -h Show simple help and version.

      -i Set parameters for booting the FAI install kernel (proper initrd, boot from nfs). This does not set FAI_ACTION

      -I Same as -i but also sets FAI_ACTION=install. So a fully automatic installation will be performed. ATTENTION! This will
             erase most of the data on the local disks of the install clients.

      -k parameters
             Set kernel append parameters.

      -l List the configuration for all hosts in short format. If PATTERN is given, list only hosts matching PATTERN. Lists host‐
             name, FAI_ACTION, kernel name and IP address in hex. Use -le, to list only enabled hosts, -ld to list only disabled hosts,
             -lt to list only templates, -lo to list only hosts that do not match any of the previous categories, and -lg to list the
             configuration for all hosts, sorted and ordered by groups (enabled, disabled, templates, others). Note that a combination
             of multiple -l options is not supported and that in listing mode no other action will be performed.

      -L List the configuration for all hosts. Also list the kernel append parameters. If PATTERN is given, list only hosts match‐
             ing PATTERN.

      -n Do not create configuration but show what would be done. This also enables the verbose flag.

      -o Do localboot via PXE. Do not boot via network card, but use next boot device which is specified in the BIOS. Normally this
             is the local disk.

      -p Preserve existing config files. The default is to overwrite an existing config file.

      -P Add the pxelinux option IPAPPEND 3 to the config file. This will add two variables to the kernel command line, that are
              also defined as variables inside FAI.

             Example:
                  BOOTIF=01-08-00-27-12-34-56
                  ip=123.45.9.99:123.45.9.11:123.45.9.254:255.255.255.128

      -s SUFFIX
             Use SUFFIX to determine which kernel and initrd to use.

      -S Same as -i but also sets FAI_ACTION=sysinfo.

      -u URL Set FAI_CONFIG_SRC to URL. If not set the value from fai.conf inside the nfsroot will be used.

      -v     Create verbose output.

EXAMPLES
      fai-chboot -l
             List the configuration for all hosts.

      fai-chboot -iFv atom02 atom03 dom kueppers
             The hosts atom02, atom03, dom and kueppers will boot the FAI install kernel. FAI_ACTION will not be set unless specified
             with option -k or -I. You can also use the script class/LAST.var on the install server to set FAI_ACTION.

      fai-chboot -FSv atom02
             The host atom02 will boot the FAI install kernel but with FAI_ACTION sysinfo.

      fai-chboot -IBv atom02
             The host atom02 will be installed. ATTENTION! All data on the local hard disks are lost in most cases, because we want to
             install a new system. After the installation the host automatically reboots.

      fai-chboot -v atom-localboot atom03
             Next time atom03 will boot the kernel atom-localboot.

      fai-chboot -vS -s2.6.18-4-amd64 faiserver
             Booting kernel vmlinuz-2.6.18-4-amd64
              append initrd=initrd.img-2.6.18-4-amd64 ip=dhcp

             faiserver has 1.2.3.4 in hex 01020304
             Writing file /srv/tftp/fai/pxelinux.cfg/01020304 for faiserver

      fai-chboot -IFv -u nfs://faiserver/srv/fai/clusterconf node03
             node03 will be installed using the configuration space /srv/fai/clusterconf, which is mounted from faiserver via NFS.

      fai-chboot memtest86+ atom02
             The host atom02 will boot the memory test. Install the package memtest86+ and copy the executable memtest86+.bin to
             /srv/tftp/fai without the .bin suffix.

      fai-chboot -o default
             All hosts, that do not have a PXE configuration for their IP-address will do a localboot, i.e. booting from local disk.

      fai-chboot -vc lenny64 james007
             This command will tell the host james007 to use the template called lenny64. Beforehand, you have to manually create the
             template and save it to /srv/tftp/fai/pxelinux.cfg/lenny64.tmpl.

NOTES
      Currently only PXE boot is supported. BOOTP configuration can be managed using the tlink utility.

      fai-setup - Setup script for Fully Automatic Installation (FAI)

SYNOPSIS
      fai-setup

DESCRIPTION
      Fully Automatic Installation (FAI) is used to provide unattended installation of Debian GNU/Linux operating systems with a very
      flexible class-based system. fai-setup is a shell script written for FAI to create the initial NFSROOT directory, add that direc‐
      tory to the NFS exports configuration file (/etc/exports), prepare the files as necessary to create the network boot floppy disk,
      and create the initial fai user that is used for copying over the installation logs to a centralized directory on the server.
      make-fai-nfsroot(8) is called to create the initial NFS root directory.

      fai-setup should be called after each change to /etc/fai/fai.conf.

OPTIONS
      All options are also passed to make-fai-nfsroot.

      -C CFDIR
             Use CFDIR as configuration directory. Default is /etc/fai. You can also set the environment variable FAI_ETC_DIR.

      -e Expert mode. Do not add entries to /etc/export and do not restart the nfs nserver.

SEE ALSO
      This program is part of FAI (Fully Automatic Installation). See the FAI manual for more information on how to use fai-setup. The
      FAI homepage is http://fai-project.org.
      make-fai-nfsroot(8), exports(5)

make-fai-nfsroot

$ man make-fai-nfsroot
make-fai-nfsroot(8)                                                                                                                            make-fai-nfsroot(8)

NAME
      make-fai-nfsroot - create the FAI nfsroot directory

SYNOPSIS
      make-fai-nfsroot [options]

DESCRIPTION
      Create the FAI nfsroot directory as pointed by $NFSROOT in the config_file. This directory is necessary for the installation of Debian on remote clients using the
      FAI package. The config_file location is discussed in the OPTIONS below.

      The exit code returned is 0 if all commands to build the root directory exited successfully and >0 if an error occurs.

OPTIONS
      -B BASETGZ
             Use specified BASETGZ file as base.tgz for the nfsroot. This avoids calling debootstrap and therefore reduces the buildtime for the nfsroot.

      -C CFDIR
             Use CFDIR as configuration directory. Default is /etc/fai. You can also set the environment variable FAI_ETC_DIR.

      -f config_file
             Not supported any more. Use option -C instead.

      -K Remove all kernels from NFSROOT. This is the same as calling aptitude purge ~nlinux-image inside the nfsroot.

      -k Install additional packages defined in /etc/fai/NFSROOT into the nfsroot. Also copies all kernels from the nfsroot to the directory $TFTPROOT.

      -p Preserve ssh keys. This will preserve the whole .ssh directory of the root account inside the nfsroot.

      -U Do not divert update-initramfs during build of the nfsroot. This will slow down the creation process a bit. Use it in case of missing initrd inside the nfs‐
             root or when Ubuntu fails if the diversion exists.

      -v Create verbose output on stdout.

      -h     Show simple help.

      -r Attempt to recover a previously failed run of this command.

NOTES
      If you do not use NFS, you may still use the NFSROOT directory as a staging point for building the base installation tarball.

RECOVERY
      CAUTION! This is an advanced feature. You should be willing to open up an editor and browse the make-fai-nfsroot code to understand what each task does and how
      your use of the recovery option can be impacted by fiddling around with the stamp files.

      You can call make-fai-nfsroot with the '-r' option to attempt a recovery of a previous run. As tasks are completed, stamp files are generated in /var/run/fai/make-
      fai-nfsroot. As each task is called in recovery mode, the stamp file is checked. If it exists, the task is skipped. This will save you much time during your ini‐
      tial install and debug phase. It is not a very sophisticated mechanism but it can help you on updating the nfsroot as well. For example, if you want to update the
      kernel that is installed, remove the following stamp files: install_kernel_nfsroot_stamp, setup_bootp_stamp, setup_dhcp_stamp.

      The order in which the stamp files are created are as follows:

      call_debootstrap_stamp
             Debootstrap was called successfully.

      create_base_stamp
             Created after successfully calling debootstrap plus a couple of other tasks.

      upgrade_nfsroot_stamp
             The packages in $NFSROOT have successfully been upgraded with apt.

      add_packages_nfsroot_stamp
             New packages have been installed with apt as specified by the $NFSPACKAGES environment variable in /etc/fai/fai.conf.

      copy_fai_files_stamp
             FAI copies a base of files to the NFSROOT directory.

      setup_ssh_stamp
             The SSH environment is set up. You could probably remove this stamp alone to refresh your ssh setup.

      create_nfsroot_stamp
             This stamp file is created when all the preceeding steps have been taken. You have a base nfsroot directory. All you need now is the kernel and the BOOTP or
             DHCP setup.

      install_kernel_nfsroot_stamp
             The kernel you specified in $KERNELPACKAGE has been installed.

      setup_bootp_stamp | setup_dhcp_stamp
             Your kernel was either BOOTP or DHCP. The appropriate setup has been completed.

Configuració

Fitxers de configuració

$ ls /etc/fai
apt  fai.conf  make-fai-nfsroot.conf  menu.lst  NFSROOT

/etc/fai/fai.conf

$ cat /etc/fai/fai.conf
# $Id: fai.conf 4568 2007-09-13 10:21:58Z lange $

# /etc/fai/fai.conf -- configuration for FAI (Fully Automatic Installation)

# Access to Debian mirror via NFS mounted directory
# If FAI_DEBMIRROR is defined, install clients mount it to $MNTPOINT
#FAI_DEBMIRROR=yournfs debianmirror:/path/to/debianmirror

# LOGUSER: an account on the install server which saves all log-files
# and which can change the kernel that is booted via network.
# Configure .rhosts for this account and PAM, so that root can log in
# from all install clients without password. This account should have
# write permissions for /srv/tftp/fai. For example, you can use write
# permissions for the group linuxadm. chgrp linuxadm /srv/tftp/fai;chmod
# g+w /srv/tftp/fai. If the variable is undefined, this feature is disabled.
# Define it, to enable it, eg. LOGUSER=fai
LOGUSER=

# set protocol type for saving logs. Values: ssh, rsh, ftp
FAI_LOGPROTO=ssh

# the configuration space on the install server
FAI_CONFIGDIR=/srv/fai/config

# how to access the fai config space
# default if undefined here: nfs://`hostname`/$FAI_CONFIGDIR
# supported URL-types: nfs, file, cvs, cvs+ssh, svn+file, svn+http,
# git, git+http,
#FAI_CONFIG_SRC=nfs://yourservername$FAI_CONFIGDIR

# the following variables are read only for most users

# mount point where the mirror will be mounted
MNTPOINT=/media/mirror

# the local configuration directory on the install client
FAI=/var/lib/fai/config

Les variables importants són:

  • nfs://host/path/to/exported/config
  • cvs[+ssh]://user@host/path/to/cvsroot module[=tag]. S'obté amb un CVS checkout
  • svn://user@host/svnpath. Checkout de subversion
  • git://host/path.

$ ls /srv/fai/nfsroot/live/filesystem.dir

Instal·leu fai:

$ sudo apt-get install fai-quickstart

Ara abans d'executar el configurador cal modificar el fitxer /etc/fai/fai.conf:

$ sudo joe /etc/fai/fai.conf

FAI_CONFIG_SRC=nfs://192.168.0.130/srv/fai/config

Un cop modificat el fitxer executeu:

$ sudo fai-setup -v

$ sudo cp -a /usr/share/doc/fai-doc/examples/simple/* /srv/fai/config/

$ sudo cp /etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf /etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf.original

I ara copieu la plantilla:

$ sudo /usr/share/doc/fai-doc/examples/etc/dhcpd.conf /etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf

Ara cal modificar-la:

$ sudo joe /etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf

Canvieu l'original:

# dhcpd.conf for fai
# replace faiserver with the name of your install server

deny unknown-clients;
option dhcp-max-message-size 2048;
use-host-decl-names on;
#always-reply-rfc1048 on;

subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
   option routers 192.168.1.250;
   option domain-name "beowulf";
   option domain-name-servers 192.168.1.250;
   option time-servers faiserver;
   option ntp-servers faiserver;
   server-name faiserver;
   next-server faiserver;
   filename "fai/pxelinux.0";
}

# perl -ane ' {print "host atom {hardware ethernet $1;fixed-address atom}";}'
host demohost {hardware ethernet 0:2:a3:b5:c5:41;fixed-address demohost;}

# dhcpd.conf for fai
# replace faiserver with the name of your install server

deny unknown-clients;
option dhcp-max-message-size 2048;
use-host-decl-names on;
#always-reply-rfc1048 on;

subnet 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
  option routers 192.168.0.1;
  option domain-name "dominiprova.vom";
  option domain-name-servers 192.168.0.1;
  option time-servers 192.168-0.130;
  option ntp-servers 192.168-0.130;
  server-name ubuntuserver1110;
  next-server 192.168-0.130;
  filename "fai/pxelinux.0";
}

Apliqueu els canvis al servidor de DHCP:

$ sudo /etc/init.d/isc-dhcp-server restart

$ sudo joe /etc/default/tftpd-hpa

I canvieu la variable TFTP_DIRECTORY:

TFTP_DIRECTORY="/srv/tftp"

I apliqueu els canvis:

$ sudo service tftpd-hpa restart

$ sudo joe /etc/hosts

Afegiu la línia:

192.168.0.151   demohost

Ara configurem l'arrancada per xarxa amb:

$ sudo fai-chboot -IFv demohost

Ara ja podeu arrancar la màquina client.

Troubleshooting.Resol·lució de problemes

ERROR: 1 live-initramfs was not installed inside the nfsroot.

Aquest error m'ha succeït (--acacha 11:44, 16 oct 2011 (UTC)) al executar:

$ sudo fai-setup -v

$ sudo dpkg -l | grep fai
ii fai-client 3.4.7ubuntu2 Fully Automatic Installation client package
ii fai-doc 3.4.7ubuntu2 Documentation for FAI
ii fai-quickstart 3.4.7ubuntu2 Fully Automatic Installation quickstart package
ii fai-server 3.4.7ubuntu2 Fully Automatic Installation server package
ii fai-setup-storage 3.4.7ubuntu2 automatically prepare storage devices

Si poseu els repositoris oficials del projecte:

deb http://fai-project.org/download squeeze koeln

Aleshores la versió instal·lada serà la 3.4.8. Amb aquesta versió no us donarà pas l'error.
